Police officer nabbed in Soweto for car theft

The Crime Intelligence officer was out on bail on another theft charge when he was arrested.

A police officer attached to the Crime Intelligence Unit in Soweto, is one of two men who were nabbed by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) K9 Unit on Saturday.

The duo, aged 23 and 33, will face various charges that include the possession of a stolen motor vehicle, fraud, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

The arrest came after JMPD officers received intel of three men travelling in a red Hyundai i10, who stole a white Volkswagen Polo linked to a case in Linden, Randburg.

The officers, who pounced on the men on the N1 South, spotted the stolen VW Polo and the getaway vehicle and initiated a takedown that led to a high-speed chase.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said: “The suspects sped off and the officers gave chase until Diepkloof where both cars were cornered. Two male suspects were arrested and one male suspect managed to flee on foot.”

According to Fihla, investigations revealed the getaway car was affixed with false registration numbers.

The police also found the original registration number of the vehicle and car-breaking tools inside the vehicle.

“The suspects were detained at Diepkloof SAPS on multiple charges, and it was later discovered that the SAPS member is currently out on bail for another case of theft. The Hyundai i10 which was used in the commission of the crime and the stole VW Polo were both booked in at the SAPS Aeroton pound for verification,” Fihla explained.

The suspects will appear in court during the course of the week.
