Load-shedding ramped up this afternoon, to continue for several days

Stage 4 load-shedding will be implemented from 12:00 today, with stages of load-shedding varying for the rest of the week.

Eskom has announced that stage 4 load-shedding will be implemented from 12:00 today. Thereafter, load-shedding will vary between stage 4 and 3 until Wednesday morning.

According to the power utility the load-shedding schedule for Thursday and Friday is indicative and will be confirmed during the course of the week.

Eskom has released the following load-shedding schedule:

“The emergency power generation reserves are almost depleted, both the diesel and pumped storage dam levels. The higher load-shedding stages are required to help build up the emergency generation reserves during the week,” Eskom said in a media statement earlier today.

The power utility said generating units at Duvha, Kriel and Medupi power stations broke down over the course of the weekend, and there were delays in returning generating units back to service at Camden, Kusile, Komati and Kendal power stations.

This has, according to Eskom, exacerbated current generation capacity shortages which forced the escalation of load-shedding.

In the meantime generating units have been returned to service at Grootvlei, Hendrina, Majuba, Matla and Tutuka power stations.

Eskom said it would publish further updates when any significant changes occur.
