Attacks on police officers: One critical another killed in two separate incidents

Two incidents involving policemen took place in Vosman in Mpumalanga and Mamelodi in Gauteng.

A 20-year-old policeman stationed at the Witbank SAPS’s Visible Policing Unit is currently fighting for his life after being stabbed at a tavern in Marikana, Vosman while another policeman was found murdered in his home in Mamelodi.

The incident in Vosman took place on Sunday and police say part of their investigation includes determining whether the policeman was on duty when he was stabbed.

Colonel Donald Mdhluli, Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson, says information suggests that the policeman’s service pistol was taken from him during the incident.

A case of attempted murder has been opened.

In a separate incident, the Pretoria Rekord reports that a policeman stationed at Eersterust, was found killed in his house in Mamelodi yesterday.

Eersterust SAPS say a customer who had come to the home of the deceased to buy a soft drink, found the body and promptly contacted the police.

The 58-year-old police officer suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body.

“The motive for the killing is not yet known and the police are appealing to the public to assist them with information that can lead to the arrest of the assailant(s),” said Sergeant Sam Shibambo from the Eersterust police

The Eersterust police encourages anyone with more information to come forward and contact them on 079 694 6663 or the Mamelodi SAPS on 079 890 7469.

Members of the public are urged to contact the police with information that may assist in the investigations by calling the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or sending information via MYSAPSAPP.

All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.
