Sharks wing Makazole Mapimpi will face a disciplinary hearing after a citing complaint was made for an alleged eye gouge on Bordeaux-Bègles scrumhalf Maxime Lucu during the match in Durban.

Mapimpi is alleged to have made contact with the eye or eye area of the Bordeaux’s Lucu in the 36th minute of the match, which the Sharks won 32-3.

Lucu made a complaint to the matchday referee Luke Pearce, who referred the incident to the television match official, but no footage could be found at the time.

However, the EPCR has now received a citing complaint against Mapimpi from the match citing commissioner Brian Campsall.

Chair Antony Davies (England), Leon Lloyd (England) and Donal Courtney (Ireland) have been appointed as the independent disciplinary committee for the hearing which will take place by video conference tomorrow.

Under World Rugby’s Sanctions for Foul Play, Law 9.12 relating to contact with the eye or eye area carries the following sanction entry points – Low end: Four weeks; mid-range: Eight weeks; top end: 12 to 52 weeks.

Having already secured their place in the Champions Cup round of 16, the Sharks travel to England this week to take on Harlequins in their final pool match on Saturday afternoon.
