Zombie fingers, guaranteed to give your family the creeps

Creepy, crumbly and deliciously gruesome, these zombie finger biscuits are a Halloween treat that's almost too frightening to eat!

These zombie fingers make a frightfully good Halloween biscuit that’s simple enough for kids to help bake. Made with buttery vanilla biscuit dough, they’re shaped into severed fingers, complete with wrinkled knuckles, almond fingernails and a generous smear of raspberry jam for that freshly bitten-off look. They’re surprisingly easy to make, and getting the fingers to look as gruesome as possible is half the fun. Pile them into a bowl, let a little jam drip down the sides and watch your guests decide whether they’re brave enough to take a bite!

Prep time: 30 minutes, plus 30 minutes chilling | Cooking time: 20 minutes | Servings: Makes about 20 biscuits

Ingredients

  • 250 g butter, softened
  • 125 ml icing sugar
  • 5 ml vanilla extract
  • 500 ml cake flour
  • 2.5 ml salt
  • 20 whole almonds
  • 60 ml raspberry jam, for the “blood”

Method

  1. Cream the butter and icing sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the vanilla extract.
  3. Sift in the flour and salt, and mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Wrap the dough and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 160°C and line two baking trays with baking paper.
  6. Pinch off small pieces of dough and roll into finger shapes, about 8 cm long, tapering slightly at one end.
  7. Use the back of a knife to score two or three lines across each finger to look like knuckles.
  8. Press a whole almond firmly into the tapered end of each finger to look like a nail.
  9. Place the fingers on the prepared trays and bake for 18 to 20 minutes, until pale golden.
  10. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely on the tray.
  11. Once cooled, dab a small amount of raspberry jam at the base of each almond, letting it drip slightly down the finger to look like blood.
  12. Serve piled into a bowl or platter.
