Suspect killed in fatal shooting outside Johannesburg primary school
A private security company's officer was involved in a shootout with men who have been linked to multiple robberies in and around the city.
A shoot-out outside Northcliff Primary School on 14th Avenue in Northcliff, Gauteng, led to a car chase that ultimately ended in a suspect being killed yesterday.
According to Fairland Police Station commander Lieutenant Colonel Clive de Freitas, a vehicle with four occupants was seen driving around the Fairland area.
One of SCP Security’s reaction officers monitored the vehicle which was eventually parked outside the school among other parked cars.
De Freitas adds that, while keeping his distance, the reaction officer kept an eye on the vehicle and its occupants while outside his reaction vehicle. While doing so, one of the suspects walked towards him and reportedly reached for a firearm.
The suspect then allegedly shot at the reaction officer, who fired back. The suspect then ran back to and entered the vehicle which drove off while damaging other cars in the process.
A statement by the Suburban Control Centre on Facebook reads: “The suspects fled and a car chase ensued through Fairland to Vaaljakkals Street in Weltevreden Park where another shoot-out occurred, leading to one suspect being fatally wounded.”
Johan Veldman of SCP Security says the deceased was pushed out of the suspects’ car and left in the middle of the street.
The suspects are said to have fled in a white Toyota Quest, which has been linked to multiple robbery cases in and around Johannesburg, according to the post.
De Freitas adds that authorities are on the lookout for the vehicle, which is fitted with false registration plates. The car has noticeable damage to it, including bullet holes and damage from the accident.
