Watch: Hair-raising video shows erosion at block of flats in Durban
Residents were evacuated from the 13-storey block of flats in Morningside while the fire department evaluated the structure.
A video circulating on social media shows extensive erosion at the base of a Morningside block of flats located on Peter Mokaba Ridge, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Divisional Commander Adam Merasi confirmed that the eThekwini Fire Department was on the scene on Friday to evacuate residents from the block of flats while the structure was evaluated.
A video, which was shared on Facebook and circulated via WhatsApp, shows hair-raising footage of the flats, which appeared to be on the brink of collapse. However, it was reported in the video that the scene was secure and would be inspected by the city.
The eThekwini municipality was not available for comment at the time of publishing.
Berea Mail visited the site yesterday to find out more.
A resident who wanted to remain anonymous was leaving the block to stay with relatives. The resident told the newspaper that renovations were underway at the block.
“On Friday, I received a call at the office to say the building pipes had burst and the entire level in the garage where I park my car had collapsed. Three months ago, the level below this collapsed. We asked the majority shareholder to stop the renovations, but digging continued, and I think the bulldozer hit a main pipe, which burst and caused this [damage],” says the resident, who added that the 13-storey block houses 92 units.
