Watch: High tide wreaks havoc on Garden Route beaches

Rough seas and strong winds were reported in large parts of the Garden Route earlier today, prompting the closure of several beaches.

All beaches in the George area of the Western Cape have been temporarily closed due to extreme high tides.

George Municipality has sent out an urgent warning for people not to visit the affected beaches.

Emergency services are busy evacuating affected residents in Herold’s Bay and Victoria Bay.

George Herald has received reports of waves crashing over the road and into seafront homes in Herold’s Bay.

Reports have also been received of vehicles being swept into the ocean by waves in Jongensfontein.

Die Poort in Mossel Bay was also temporarily closed. Further afield, rough seas were reported in Gordon’s Bay.

People are warned that it is not safe along the coastline due to the very high tides and rough water conditions.

Due to the high swells, high winds and some rain overnight on Friday, Knysna has been struck by flooding in several parts of the town. This includes Old Cape Road, Waterfront Drive and various parts of Leisure Isle. Residents are advised to exercise caution when travelling around town.
