New Zealand Rugby is reportedly in talks with its SA Rugby counterparts to revive the iconic All Blacks-Springboks tours.

Speaking to New Zealand’s Stuff, NZ Rugby CEO Mark Robinson confirmed discussions and hinted at potential matches involving local and franchise teams during reciprocal tours. While details remain undisclosed, the negotiations are reportedly well advanced.

“We’ve been open with all the SANZAAR parties that that’s something that we’re having a look at, and how we can consider that sort of format for the future,” Robinson said.

“So, it’s early days but obviously with the reduction in time we have in playing against South Africa in Super [Rugby], I think there would be real interest in it.

These tours could provide a financial boost for New Zealand franchises and elevate Kiwi teams’ physicality and standards, addressing the void left by South Africa’s departure to European club competitions

Talks of the potential revival align with World Rugby’s council meeting in late October, coinciding with discussions about the Nations Cup. Bilateral arrangements like the All Blacks-Springboks tour may precede the Nations Cup’s announcement.

It is understood that this development is welcomed by cash-strapped Super Rugby sides and incoming All Blacks coach Scott Robertson, who values South Africa’s contribution to rugby. Further calendar changes for the All Blacks, too, are anticipated in the future.
