Soweto CIT guard charged with murder after shooting at mall
An altercation between a guard refilling an ATM and a person waiting to use the machine ended in tragedy.
A cash-in-transit (CIT) security officer was arrested at Jabulani Mall in Soweto on Tuesday afternoon after he allegedly shot and killed a civilian in a scuffle.
It is alleged that a 33-year-old man tried to disarm the CIT guard, during which the security guard’s firearm went off.
“It is reported that the security officer was on duty loading money in an ATM when he requested patrons queuing at the ATM to make a safe way for him, but one of them refused and this led to a scuffle between the two.
“In the process, the trigger of the firearm was pulled, and the bullet hit the patron,” says Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
The victim sustained injuries to the upper body and was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.
The security officer is expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court soon.
