Elderly man killed during house robbery in Pietermaritzburg

A 72-year-old man was stabbed as he fought off two men who broke into his home in Bombay Heights.

A great grandfather from Bombay Heights in Pietermaritzburg was killed during the early hours of yesterday morning during a house robbery.

Rajendra Chetty (72) was stabbed multiple times as he tried to fight off two intruders who broke into his home.

Chetty’s grandson, Davelan Saminathan, said a neighbour noticed something was amiss when he saw his grandfather’s door open early in the morning.

He said they immediately rushed to the house.

“Our neighbour called and alerted us. As we rushed out, we saw two men running from my grandfather’s house. Our only concern was to get to my grandfather.

“We found him bleeding from his head and there was a lot of blood all over. He was breathing but passed on shortly afterwards,” said Saminathan.

SAPS members were gathering information on the scene.
