2 arrested after ‘half-naked’ teenage girl’s body found in Mpumalanga

The men were arrested a day after the girl’s body was discovered near an unfinished house.

The body of a girl (15) that was discovered in Balfour has led to the arrest of two young men aged 18 and 19. The girl’s body was found half-naked, with a silver piece of plastic covering her private parts and police are still investigating to determine whether she was raped.

Members of the community made the gruesome discovery on Friday around 09:00 and summoned police and paramedics to the scene. The girl’s body was found next to an unfinished house in Goede Section.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said they arrested a 19-year-old suspect on Saturday morning and a second suspect, aged 18, later the same day.

Mohlala says the two suspects appeared in the Balfour Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of murder. He says further investigations, like an autopsy, might see more charges added.

Mpumalanga provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has strongly condemned the brutal killing of the young girl.

“This is a shameful incident seeing that we just had 16 days of Activism for no violence against women and children. We hope that the law will take its course and justice be served for the murdered girl, ” said Manamela.
