Boksburg police officers accused of assault and torture in court this year

All of the police officers were released on bail last year and have since returned to work.

Four Boksburg North police officers accused of assaulting and torturing a Nigerian man into a coma in January 2023 are expected back in the dock at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on April 4 for trial.

Constables Sakhile Mathaba, Mlondolozi Khalipha and Nkateko Hlogwane and Sergeant Sibusiso Shabangu face charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and defeating the end of justice.

They were granted bail of R5 000 each on February 10, 2023.

The officers were arrested at work by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) last year.

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping further confirmed Shabangu will also be on trial on February 8 for a culpable homicide case against him.

Shuping did not elaborate on the matter of culpable homicide. However, the charge sheet indicates the charge emanates from an incident where Shabangu shot and killed Ikechukwu Callixtus Odoh on 9th Avenue on December 29, 2017.
