Road workers fear the ‘deadly’ Townhill section of the N3 highway

Wednesday's multi-vehicle crash on the notorious stretch claimed the life of a maintenance worker and three others.

Road maintenance workers on the Townhill section of the N3 in Pietermaritzburg fear for their safety following a spate of deadly accidents and Wednesday’s truck crash, which claimed the life of one of their colleagues.

Four people were killed in the collision when a truck carrying a load of tomatoes ploughed into another truck and a bakkie at around 15:00, at the bottom of the notorious decline.

Nearby road and verge maintenance workers rushed to the scene when they heard the crash — finding the mangled wreckage, the scene soaked with blood-red smashed tomatoes and bodies of three victims, including a worker from another maintenance team.
