Watch: Fire engulfs Funchal Café in Mpumalanga

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a café in a gold mining town.

The Funchal Cafe in Barberton, Mpumalanga, was destroyed after being engulfed in flames last night.

Rian Prinsloo, the technical manager of Hi-Tech Security Barberton, said that they received an alert from an emergency group about smoke emanating from the café, located on the corner of De Villiers and President streets, at 18:30.

A patrol vehicle was dispatched and confirmed the presence of smoke.

Prinsloo emphasised that there was a heightened risk, due to the cafe’s proximity to a gas supply shop.

While the fire was under control at the time of publishing last night, the entire café had been consumed by the flames.

The cause of the fire is unknown, said Prinsloo.
