Videos: Unite behind Bafana Bafana ahead of clash with Nigeria

Can South Africa’s national soccer side reach the final or will it be heartbreak and despair at the hands of Nigeria in tonight’s semi-final?

Tonight, Bafana Bafana (a term derived from the Zulu for ‘the boys’) will hope to book their spot in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) for the first time since 1998.

In their way stands a confident Nigerian side with stars such as Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, Fulham FC midfielder Alexander Iwobi and Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman.

The task is mighty, but Bafana Bafana is on a quest to relive the glory days of 1996 – South Africa’s first and only Afcon triumph, and incidentally its inaugural Afcon tournament.

In a bid to give the players an extra edge, Sport Minister Zizi Kodwa has urged South Africans to rally behind the team as a metaphoric 12th player. “Let us unite in our support for Bafana Bafana. Let us gather in our homes and in public spaces to show our support to this team, which has done the nation so proud at Afcon. As proud South Africans, let us once again show the power of sport to unite people from all walks of life.”

Team news

Coach Hugo Broos, who lifted the Afcon title with Cameroon in 2017, remains confident in his side, despite some sad team news.

“Sadly due to the third-degree tear (hamstring), [Thapelo] Maseko is out for the rest of the tournament. But he remains with us till the end,” he said at a press conference.

No other injury concerns have been noted ahead of the semi-final clash at the Stade De La Paix Bouake, which kicks off at 19:00.
