Pietermaritzburg mass murder: Angry crowd ordered to leave courtroom

Community members who began mumbling and making inflammatory remarks about the men accused of axing a family to death were kicked out of the courtroom.

A Pietermaritzburg magistrate ordered an angry and disruptive crowd to leave the court yesterday during the trial of three men accused of killing a family of five, including three children, in the Edendale area last month.

The crowd turned hostile when Magistrate Padmini Chetty was presiding over the case in which 11-year-old twins Ayanda and Anele Gumede, along with their younger sister Ziyanda (9), their mother Fikile Patricia Gumede (45) and their grandmother Mildred Thokozile Gumede (85) were axed to death in their home on January 16.

Siphelele Xulu (24), Philani Shezi (39) and Sthembiso Khoza (44) from the Mgodini area, in Edendale, face five charges of murder and one charge of robbery.
