Well-known Durban actor charged with child porn denied bail

An actor, one of several suspects arrested in connection with child pornography, has been remanded in custody for further investigations.

The Durban theatre actor charged with the possession of child pornography has been denied bail.

The award-winning actor, who cannot be named until he pleads to the charges, made his first appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The bail hearing was rolled over to today, with the magistrate refusing him bail.

He will be remanded in custody until June 3 for further investigations.

The actor was arrested last week in Umbilo and is among several suspects arrested by a joint operation involving the police and the US Department of Homeland Security targeting child pornography in South Africa.

“This is a high-profile case with sensitive information that could hurt the case if it is prematurely released. We will also hear testimony from the international intelligence via video call and details of that testimony cannot be made public,” the SAPS said.

The actor was one of two individuals apprehended in KZN on charges relating to the possession, downloading, accessing, and manufacturing of child pornography, according to the SAPS.
