George Herald, one of Group Editors’ publications, on Monday requested the building plans of the collapsed building in Victoria Street from the George Municipality.

The request was denied, and Group Editors was instructed to apply for access to these documents in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000.

An application has subsequently been filed.

Group Editors bases its application on the public interest of the information in light of the gravity of the situation that affects not only George residents but also the national and international community. The company’s application also rests on the municipality’s Access to Information Manual, which is aimed at fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. The manual seeks to ‘actively promote a society in which the people of George have effective access to information to enable them to fully exercise and protect all of their rights’.

The application was filed yesterday. In response, George Municipality has requested additional documentation. Group Editors will keep readers updated on the outcome of the application.

Meanwhile, a media briefing is set for 13:00 in front of the foyer of the George Town Hall to update on the latest statistics after the tragedy at 75 Victoria Street.
