A toast to democracy: Freebies and funnies on Election Day

Whether Election Day freebies are clever marketing ploys or genuine thanks to civic-minded citizens, they always go down well. As do themed adverts that make the nation laugh.

The ink on the thumbs of voters is a mark of pride to people who believe in participatory democracy – but it is also their ticket to freebies and discounts.

Wimpy has for years been rewarding voters with free coffee and this year is no different – except a choice of chocolate or caffeine is now offered. Pop into your local Wimpy after voting, flash your inked thumb, and enjoy a free coffee or cup of hot chocolate.

#StrongandFree is the clever hashtag Spur is using to promote the free coffee it is giving South African voters. Again, your inked thumb will earn you your brew.

Mugg & Bean has joined the #CupsForVotes campaign and offers voters a free cup of Americano.

Kripsy Kreme’s sweet incentive for voters ends when the stock runs out so don’t delay – your proof of voting will get you a free original glazed doughnut from Krispy Kreme main stores and Checkers full experience stores.

Various other franchises and local establishments are offering localised freebies or discounts, so keep your eye on social media.

Clever adverts

South Africans’ often-dark humour is leaving its mark this Election Day too.
