Commercial explosives concealed in bags were confiscated by police at the Beitbridge Border post after a vehicle crossed into South Africa from Zimbabwe.

Two men are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of smuggling and possession of explosives following their arrest early yesterday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the men, aged 32 and 42, were arrested for attempting to smuggle commercial explosives into the country.

“The concerted efforts by the police at the Beitbridge Border Post to eradicate the smuggling of illegal goods into the country continues to yield positive results. The suspects were arrested just after midnight as they crossed into South Africa from Zimbabwe,” he adds.

According to Ledwaba, the Toyota Quantum with a trailer that the duo were travelling in, was stopped and searched and police discovered commercial explosives concealed inside bags.

“Members of the Musina Explosive Unit attended the scene and 124 blasting cartridges and at least 109 safety fuses were confiscated,” he says.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the members for their vigilance.
