A security guard is in serious condition after he was shot in an attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery in the Durban CBD this morning.

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the incident occurred at about 07:40 on the corner of Joe Slovo Street (formerly Field Street) and Bertha Mkhize Street (formerly Victoria Street).

“Paramedics arrived on scene with metro police and SAPS in attendance to find an injured security guard lying on the pavement next to his vehicle. Paramedics assessed the man and found that he had sustained a serious gunshot wound to his upper body. He was stabilised on the scene by paramedics before being rushed to a nearby hospital,” he says.

It is believed the suspects were unsuccessful in their attempt to rob the guard, and he sustained a gunshot wound to his left arm.

In April, a CIT security guard was shot and injured in an alleged CIT robbery on Rick Turner Road.

In that incident, the armed robbers attacked the guard as he was carrying the cash over to the CIT vehicle.

They managed to flee the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.
