Man arrested in Mbombela for allegedly inciting public violence on social media
The suspect had allegedly circulated a message on social media stating that the country should be closed down and the president removed.
A 36-year-old is expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday for allegedly inciting public violence on social media.
The suspect was arrested on charges of contravening Section 17 of the Riotous Assemblies Act 17 of 1965.
According to the Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, members of the Nelspruit Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit and the Crime Intelligence Unit followed up on information regarding a person who was inciting public violence through social media, by saying that the country must be shut down and the president must be removed.
“Investigation was initiated and the suspect was identified and arrested for further contravening Section 14 of the Cybercrimes Act 19 of 2020, which says any person who discloses, by means of an electronic communication, a data message to a person or group of persons or the public in general with the intention to incite violence shall be guilty as charged,” she said.
Sekgotodi said the suspect was arrested, charged and detained pending his first court appearance on Monday.
