40-year sentence for KZN leader of a hijacking syndicate
A man will serve a hefty jail sentence after being convicted on numerous charges, including four counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and four counts of kidnapping.
The Mtubatuba High Court has sentenced Sipho Smirnoff Mhlanga (37), the leader of a KZN hijacking syndicate, to an effective 40 years in prison.
He was convicted on four counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, four counts of kidnapping, and unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, the spokesperson for the KZN National Prosecuting Authority, said between December 2022 and August 2023, Mhlanga and others targeted people who owned 4×4s.
They hijacked the victims and took them to a secluded spot in Emanguzi where other suspects watched them until they received a call from the hijackers to release them, says Ramkisson-Kara.
The vehicles were sold in Mozambique.
