Two ATMs at the Global Filling Station in Rooisteen, Sharpeville, were bombed early this morning.

Residents told Sedibeng Ster that sounds from the bombing woke them up at around 01:35.

“They used heavy machinery and we heard about six to eight bombs. When we went outside to see what was happening, we realised that the street alongside the garage was guarded by heavily armed men. They fired their guns when people or a vehicle tried to get near the scene,” the residents said.

When Sedibeng Ster arrived on the scene this morning, Fidelity personnel were busy with their investigations.

No one was injured during the bombings.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said police received a complaint of an ATM bombing at the filling station in Seeiso Street. Police went to the scene where they found that two express ATMs, from FNB and Standard Bank respectively, were damaged with explosives.

“A preliminary investigation suggests that an undisclosed amount of cash has been taken,” Masondo said.

Police have opened a case of ATM bombings and are on the lookout for the suspects.
