Video: 2 suspects killed, police officer injured in Gauteng shoot-out

One suspect managed to flee the scene after police cornered them while they were allegedly underway to Sedibeng to commit a robbery.

Several days after four suspected armed robbers were killed in a shoot-out with police on R59, another two suspects were fatally wounded yesterday on the same road.

Police say the incident took place on the R59 in Kliprivier.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said police received a tip-off about suspects en route to commit a cross-pavement robbery in Sedibeng, Vaal.

“The suspects were intercepted, and when approached, they opened fire on the police, who retaliated, fatally shooting two of the suspects, while one fled the scene on foot,” she said.

Nevhuhulwi said that one firearm was recovered at the scene. A preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle used by the suspects had been reported stolen in Alexandra in October.

The Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, praised the team, which consisted of the Gauteng Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Traffic, and private security companies, for their swift response and for acting decisively to protect the citizens of Gauteng Province.

Second fatal shoot-out in one week

On Saturday, four suspected robbers were killed in a shoot-out with police on the R59 between Nelson Mandela Avenue and Swarkoppies Road in Alberton.

Police, following up information about a planned business robbery, found a car matching the description provided.

Attempts to pull over the silver Toyota Corolla resulted in a high-speed chase and shoot-out. Four unlicenced firearms were recovered from the scene.
