Matsulu police in Mpumalanga are investigating a case of hijacking and attempted murder after a 43-year-old man was shot and his VW Polo hijacked on the N4 near the KaNyamanzane turn-off yesterday.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the police patrolling the area noticed a man trying to stop cars next to the road. They saw he was bleeding and stopped to check on him.

“He told the police he had been shot by a group of unknown [hijackers] while he was fishing with his friend at the Mgwenya River. The [men] demanded his car keys and shot him in the leg. His friend managed to escape unharmed. He was then rushed to Nelspruit Mediclinic by the Emer-G-Med paramedics,” Mdhluli says.

Mdhululi confirmed that the car had not yet been found and that the gunmen were still at large.
