How to choose gifts that won’t soon be forgotten

Forget about material possessions. This holiday season, consider gifting experiences that create lasting memories.

Tired of the annual gift-giving stress? Consider a more meaningful approach this year.

Dr Marlet Tromp, a life, executive, and business coach, suggests that experiences can often be more impactful than material gifts.

“Shared experiences build stronger bonds and evoke lasting emotions,” Tromp explains. “By gifting your time and attention, you show genuine care and appreciation.”

Tailoring your gift

When choosing an experience, consider the recipient’s interests and personality.

Here are some ideas:

  • For the single parent: A night of babysitting or a helping hand with household chores.
  • The lifelong learner: Coaching sessions or lessons to acquire a new skill.
  • The bookworm: A subscription to their favourite magazine or a bookstore voucher.
  • The outdoor enthusiast: A day hike, a picnic, or a visit to a botanical garden.
  • The thrill-seeker: Skydiving, rock climbing, or other adrenaline-pumping activities.
  • That ever-fit friend: An introductory lesson for an innovative new fitness class.
  • The fashionista: A personal styling session.
  • Your best friend: A personalised slideshow, a home-cooked meal, to tickets to a concert or theatre performance for both of you.

The power of giving back

Life and career coach Penny Holburn emphasises the value of lending a helping hand. “Offering your expertise or time to help someone can be the most meaningful gift of all,” she says.

Consider these ideas:

  • Pay a bill, fill up their car, or assist with household tasks.
  • Offer your expertise in areas like finance, law, gardening, or a pamper session.
