8 confirmed dead after shooting at Mpumalanga tavern

A 72-hour plan has been activated to bring perpetrators to justice following a shooting that left eight people dead, and three others injured in Pienaar.

The number of people who died in a shooting at Dludlu Tavern in Pienaar, Mpumalanga, at around 04:00, has increased from six to eight.

Mpumalanga News reports that, according to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, six people were fatally shot at the scene. Two others, a male and a female, later died in hospital. Three victims, two males and a female, are still receiving medical treatment.

“Two VW Polos were also found at the scene, riddled with bullet holes. One of the victims was found dead inside one of the vehicles. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown at this stage, and circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation. There is a team of experts in the investigation field that has been assembled to investigate this incident. A 72-hour plan has been activated subsequent to the incident,” says Ndubane.

Anyone with information that may assist in apprehending the murderers is urged to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send information via the MySAPS app.

Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie says: “We condemn this barbaric and senseless loss of lives in the strongest possible terms. We are once more appealing that the police be given space and time to get to the bottom of the shootings. The perpetrators must be urgently arrested.

“We are again calling on liquor traders to always prioritise the safety of their patrons. We further extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, and we also wish those who were injured a speedy recovery.”
