2 motor theft suspects killed in Pretoria police van crash

Two suspects died and five officers were injured when a police van collided with a Hyundai in Sunnyside yesterday.

Two suspects were killed when a police van collided and a private vehicle collided in Sunnyside, Pretoria, yesterday. Five officers sustained injuries, while another suspect was taken for medical treatment.

According to local police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, police were transporting three suspects who had just been arrested for theft of a motor vehicle when the police van and a Hyundai Atos collided.

“Two suspects died on the scene, while the third one was transported to the medical care centre for treatment.

“Five police officers who were inside the same police van sustained injuries and were taken to the nearest medical care centre for treatment.”

He says the driver of the private vehicle was not injured.

“The suspects were found in possession of car jammers and different sets of car registration plates. Police have opened a case of culpable homicide.”
