Suspect injured in shoot-out with police in Pietermaritzburg

A shoot-out between police and fleeing suspects left one wounded and another in cuffs.

A suspect was injured in a shoot-out with police this morning on the N3, at the Market Road offramp in Pietermaritzburg.

The Witness reports that according to Mi7, emergency medical services were dispatched after reports of an active shooting just before 08:00.

Mi7 medics arrived to find that a shoot-out had occurred between Pietermaritzburg police and suspects they were pursuing. One suspect was injured during the shoot-out, sustaining bullet wounds.

“He was treated by Mi7 medics before being taken to hospital under police guard,” said Mi7.

A second suspect was also arrested.

No civilians were injured in the shooting.

Workers at a nearby road construction site said security officers fired at the vehicle after the driver tried to evade them. The vehicle was travelling towards Durban when it got cornered on the Market Road offramp.

“The security vehicle was already waiting for the suspects and a police vehicle was apparently pursuing the suspects from behind. The driver tried to change lanes to evade direct confrontation with the security but failed because the lanes were narrowed due to the construction and that brought the suspect’s car to a standstill.

“That’s when the guns were drawn with warnings for the occupants to get out of the car. Gunshots rang out and only the passenger managed to step out with his hands high in the air. The driver was taken to hospital,” said the employees, who declined to give their names.

The suspects’ vehicle had two bullet holes in the windshield.
