Toddler thrown against a wall: Bloemfontein man due back in court

A two-year-old girl sustained severe injuries after being thrown against a wall and slapped, allegedly by her mother’s boyfriend.

A 50-year-old man is still in police custody after being arrested for allegedly throwing a two-year-old girl against a wall during a violent altercation with his girlfriend.

Bloemfontein Courant reports that the incident occurred in the early hours last Saturday, at the suspect’s home in Glen in Bloemfontein.

According to reports, the 29-year-old mother had briefly left her two children in her boyfriend’s care while she went to a neighbour’s house to borrow a cellphone.

When she returned, a heated argument erupted after the man accused her of an interaction with another man. The confrontation turned violent, with the suspect allegedly attacking the woman before waking the children and demanding they leave the property.

“The youngest child, a two-year-old girl, refused to comply, at which point the suspect allegedly picked her up and violently threw her against a wall,” says SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli. “He then proceeded to slap her across the face with an open hand.”

According to Kareli, the child’s mother fled the scene with the injured toddler and sought refuge at her mother’s house.

“The child sustained severe injuries, including swelling on the left side of her face, swollen lips, and bleeding from the nose.”

Police in Glen opened an assault case following the incident, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

The accused appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was remanded in custody.

He is due to return to court on Tuesday for further proceedings.
