A violent conflict broke out between rival groups of illegal miners (zama zamas) in the Swartkoppies area yesterday. The clashes, marked by automatic gunfire and explosions, have prompted a security response.

The conflict occurred near the Bulk Diesel company, adjacent to a dump site in Swartkoppies.
Authorities rushed to the scene where an intense confrontation marked with automatic gunfire and explosions was reported.
Arrests made
Two suspects were apprehended and taken to the Mondeor police station. However, eight others managed to flee the scene by escaping across the river.
Residents were advised to stay indoors and avoid the area until the situation is brought under control.
Second gun-battle between illegal miners this week
A violent shoot-out erupted on Wednesday night, leaving residents living near Golden Drive and New Modder mining sites in Benoni, Ekurhuleni, living in fear.
Benoni City Times reported that according to messages shared on a local community WhatsApp group, the gunfire began at around 17:30 and continued into the evening, sending families into panic as shots rang out just meters from their homes.
