Scaffolding collapse at Durban shopping centre kills 1, injures 4

One person died and four others were injured after scaffolding collapsed at a shopping centre in Springfield.

One construction worker died and four others were injured this morning when scaffolding gave way at a shopping centre in Springfield.

According to Berea Mail, ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the incident happened around 11:00.

“We responded to the incident at a popular shopping centre, in Springfield Shopping Centre, off Umgeni Road. Initial reports show that the construction team was working on a scaffolding when it gave way, falling approximately 6m to the ground.

“There was chaos, as we discovered that five workers were injured, one of who, a male around 40 years old, sustained serious injuries and was declared dead on the scene. The rest, with moderate to critical injuries, were stabilised and rushed to the nearby hospital for further medical care.”

The cause of the collapse has not yet been established, and SAPS are investigating.
