Child (8) killed: Limpopo police officer arrested for drunk driving

The suspect is expected to appear in court on Monday facing charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence.

A police constable stationed at the Motetema police station in the Sekhukhune district is in custody after he allegedly hit a child with his state vehicle last night (August 8).

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the incident happened at around 19:15 in the Mogaung village. Emergency services were called to the scene but could not save the child.

Ledwaba said the Independent Police investigative Directorate will investigate the matter.

The 36-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Nebo Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the arrest.
