Body believed to be missing pilot found on Durban beach

A body in a flight suit, believed to be that of pilot Andrew Blackwood-Murray who crashed into the sea last month, was discovered on Durban’s North Beach late last night.

A body believed to be that of missing pilot, 61-year-old Andrew Blackwood-Murray, has been found washed ashore at Durban’s North Beach.

According to ALS Paramedics, they responded to numerous calls of a man who had been found on the shore of North Beach at around 22:30 last night. The body of the deceased was wearing a flight suit, Berea Mail reports.

“Paramedics responded to the scene and found SAPS already in attendance, with the area cordoned off. Paramedics were shown to the beach where they found a male believed to be in his sixties who had been washed up onto the sand. The man was assessed however he showed no signs of life and was declared deceased on the scene,” said ALS spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.

“At this stage the circumstances surrounding this incident are unknown, however SAPS will be investigating further.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the investigation is being handled by Durban Central SAPS who have opened an inquest docket for investigation following the recovery of a body along the Bay of Plenty beach.

“The unidentifiable body was possibly washed out from the ocean and was wearing a flight suit. Preliminary investigations suggest that it could be the body of the pilot who crashed into the sea last month, however, formal identification processes will be conducted to ascertain the body’s identity,” said Netshiunda.
