Motion adopted to rename KMI Airport and Kruger National Park
The Mpumalanga legislature has adopted a motion to rename key landmarks, including the Kruger National Park – because of its link to the ‘architect of apartheid’.
The Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature has adopted a motion to rename KMI Airport in honour of the late former deputy president David ‘DD’ Mabuza.
According to Lowvelder, the motion also proposes renaming the Kruger National Park to the Skukuza National Park.
The motion, introduced without notice by EFF member of the provincial legislature Rhulani Quibi, was presented during a sitting for oral replies by Premier Mandla Ndlovu today.
Quibi said the motion was a reflection of the widely celebrated Heritage Month.
“September 24 is the Heritage Month holiday in honour of our heritage as South Africans. How do we celebrate our heritage as South Africans when we still have our beautiful national park name after an architect of apartheid, Paul Kruger. How do we celebrate Heritage Month when our airport is named after the same apartheid murderer, Kruger, who stole our land and killed our forefathers,” Quibi said.
He continued: “I, therefore, in light of the points that I have mentioned, call upon the provincial government to immediately rename the Kruger National Park the Skukuza National Park, and that KMI Airport be renamed DD Mabuza International Airport.”
The motion was adopted by all members present in the legislature. However, the matter will be further discussed before it can be processed, as it involves a number of different entities.
The Kruger National Park was officially established in 1926 and named after Paul Kruger, who had advocated for wildlife protection.
KMI Airport was built to replace the smaller Nelspruit Airport and officially opened in October 2002.
It provides better access to the Mpumalanga region’s natural attractions such as the Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon.
