SA sends investigators to Paris to probe Nathi Mthethwa’s death
Officers will assist in gathering information, examining circumstances around the death, and ensuring transparency throughout the inquest process.
South Africa will dispatch a team of senior investigators to France to probe the sudden death of the country’s ambassador to Paris, Nathi Mthethwa.
The move comes as questions continue to swirl around the circumstances leading to the diplomat’s passing, The Witness reports.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that a group of “seasoned” officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) will travel to Paris for a week-long investigation.
The team is expected to work in close collaboration with French authorities to gather evidence and analyse all available details.
“We want to ensure that we eliminate any doubts around Ambassador Mthethwa’s death,” Mathe said. “We expect a full, comprehensive report by the end of next week from our team.”
Mthethwa, a veteran politician and diplomat, died on Tuesday while serving in his post as ambassador to France, a position he assumed in 2023. His sudden passing shocked the diplomatic community and sparked widespread speculation.
The mysterious circumstances of his final days have fuelled speculation. Mthethwa was recently named at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into police corruption and was previously implicated at the Zondo Commission in the illegal prosecution of former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks boss Johan Booysen.
His name resurfaced just two weeks ago when KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged that, as police minister, he interfered in investigations involving former crime intelligence head Richard Mdluli.
