National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola addressed the media at Sophiatown Police Station early on Tuesday, providing an update on the ongoing investigation into the mass shooting in the Westbury community of Joburg.

Northcliff Melville Times reports that Masemola confirmed that police are intensifying efforts to track down four teenage suspects believed to be behind the deadly attack, which claimed the lives of two teenagers while five other victims remain in hospital, some still in critical condition.

“It’s just a matter of time before we track down these teenagers,” said Masemola, assuring the public that law enforcement officers are working around the clock to bring the suspects to justice. He added that crime intelligence operatives, detectives, and uniformed police are following several leads in multiple areas.

Crackdown on gang violence and drug dens

Masemola also addressed the broader fight against gang violence that continues to plague several communities in Gauteng. “I am continuously receiving briefings on progress made in addressing gang violence in this area and other hotspots across the province.”

He has instructed the Gauteng police commissioner to take decisive action against so-called ‘lolly lounges’ – informal gathering spots where, according to reports, children skip school to use drugs. “We are coming after the owners of these houses, as well as those that are supplying the drugs.”

Children used by gang members

Masemola expressed concern about firearms ending up in the hands of children, some as young as 13. “We are aware that older gang members are using children as runners to evade justice. We are focusing on these handlers and will make them answer for destroying the future of these young children.”

Anti-Gang Unit operations continue

Masemola further noted that the Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit remains on high alert, continuing its operations across eight gang-affected communities, including Westbury, Langlaagte, Reiger Park and Eldorado Park. The unit, he said, is working tirelessly to restore safety and stability in the affected areas.
