Mahindra unveils new Lifestyler double-cab bakkie

The Indian automaker expands its global bakkie presence with a new lifestyle-focused double-cab scheduled for South African release.

Announced in 2023, the Lifestyler – or Scorpio Lifestyler, as it is known in its home market – is Mahindra making good on its promise of developing a truly global pickup. Positioned as a lifestyle-oriented bakkie, the Indian automaker officially revealed this new double-cab on Friday (August 14) in Mumbai, India.

Designed at the Mahindra India Design Studio in Mumbai and developed at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai, the Lifestyler was conceived to redefine the midsize bakkie segment, the company says.

“From the outset, our vision was to create a world-class global pickup that raises the bar for the segment while remaining true to Mahindra’s strengths in authentic capability and value,” said Dr Velusamy R, President of Automotive Business at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

Mahindra Lifestyler SA launch date

Mahindra has confirmed the Lifestyler will launch in SA in the first half of 2026. The local model lineup and pricing will be revealed closer to the Lifestyler’s market introduction.

Although Mahindra has remained tight-lipped about details surrounding the Lifestyler’s powertrain and drivetrain options.

However, we expect the Lifestyler will share the former and latter with the Scorpio-N. As a reminder, the current-generation Scorpio-N is exclusively sold in SA with Mahindra’s familiar mHawk 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine, coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The four-cylinder unit produces 129kW and 400Nm of torque – the former and latter available from 3 500 and 1 750r/min, respectively. The mHawk unit can be had with either rear-wheel or 4×4 drivetrains.

Mahindra has yet to reveal payload capacity, and braked and unbraked towing capacity.

Similarly, the company hasn’t revealed exterior dimensions. However, getting up close to the Lifestyler at the global unveiling – its size seems par for the course compared to rivals…if not perhaps slightly larger than some.

When the Lifestyler arrives in our market in 2027, it will go up against segment stalwarts such as the new Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Triton, and newly established rivals such as the GWM P500 and P300.

The Lifestyler’s interior plays host to a new multifunction steering wheel, digital instrumentation, and a large, portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen. Dual-zone climate control is also present.

“Combining bold exterior design, plush interiors and SUV-like comfort with unmistakable Mahindra toughness, it brings style and refinement to every journey,” said Pratap Bose, Chief Design and Creative Officer at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
