Police reservist linked to Madlanga Commission dies in apparent suicide in Brakpan

A man who recently featured in testimony at the Madlanga Commission and survived an alleged assassination attempt earlier this week was found dead at a Brakpan petrol station in an apparent suicide.

A man who had just stepped into the harsh glare of the Madlanga Commission is now dead, his life ending in a single gunshot at a busy Ekurhuleni petrol station.

A police reservist who recently featured in testimony before the Madlanga Commission has died in an apparent suicide at a petrol station in Brakpan in Ekurhuleni.

The Witness reports that, according to crime journalist Yusuf Abramjee, the deceased is Wiandre Pretorius.

He reportedly shot himself at the petrol station yesterday.

The incident is understood to have occurred in front of his partner, Juan-Mare Eksteen, a police sergeant, who was also named during proceedings at the commission of inquiry into criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.

Earlier this week, Pretorius claimed there had been an attempt on his life outside his home in Boksburg.

Gunmen allegedly fired several shots at the property. No injuries were reported in that incident.

Pretorius and others had previously been implicated in the 2022 murder of a Brakpan suspect.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has finalised its investigation into that matter and referred the docket to the National Prosecuting Authority for a decision on possible prosecution.

Police confirmed an inquest docket has been registered after a 41-year-old man allegedly shot and killed himself at a filling station in Brakpan yesterday.

All role players, including police detectives and forensic experts, attended the crime scene.

This matter is under investigation.
