Government reassures South Africans of stable fuel supply despite global tensions
Although the country’s fuel supplies are currently stable, higher petrol prices are expected in the coming months.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources assures South Africans that the country’s fuel supply remains stable for now, despite growing uncertainty in global energy markets linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, reports The Witness.
The government says it is working closely with industry players to secure both crude oil and refined petroleum products from a range of suppliers, with a plan in place to manage any potential disruptions.
Fuel shipments scheduled for this month and early next month were secured before the recent escalation in tensions. These deliveries are already underway and are expected to keep the country adequately supplied in the coming weeks.
However, officials have raised concerns over rising international oil prices, which have climbed above $100 (R1 697.44) a barrel due to supply disruptions and instability affecting key global shipping routes.
As a net importer of petroleum products, South Africa remains inherently exposed to these external dynamics.
“Sustained increases in international oil prices, coupled with exchange rate fluctuations, are expected to translate into higher domestic fuel prices in the months ahead,” says the department.
The department also stresses the need for transparency in fuel pricing, particularly for unregulated products such as jet fuel, saying industry players must ensure prices are fair and comply with competition and consumer protection laws.
The government says it will continue monitoring supply levels, assessing risks, and working with stakeholders to respond where necessary.
While the short-term outlook remains stable, government is actively advancing measures to strengthen long-term energy security.
“These interventions include the diversification of fuel import sources, the enhancement of strategic storage capacity, and the acceleration of key infrastructure investments.”
The department adds that the country will also continue meeting its regional supply commitments while prioritising domestic fuel security.
The department says it will keep the public informed as the situation develops.
