Legal spotlight turns on senior Ekurhuleni metro police officials in corruption probe
Questions over conduct within a metro police unit have intensified following the arrest of acting chief Julius Mkhwanazi.
Two senior Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officials are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court today, following their arrests in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation.
The Boksburg Advertiser is at court and will provide updates as proceedings get underway.
Second arrest
The SAPS confirmed that yesterday, its Madlanga Commission Task Team arrested another senior municipal official, attached to the EMPD, in Johannesburg.
The arrest comes a day after suspended EMPD acting chief Julius Mkhwanazi was taken into custody at his home.
Mkhwanazi’s arrest followed his recent appearance before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Charges
Both the newly arrested official and Mkhwanazi face charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating or obstructing the ends of justice.
According to police, the arrests form part of a broader investigation into alleged corruption within the EMPD.
