Watch: Sardines netted in KZN
Crowds lined the beach in Port Edward to witness the first sardine catch, marking the start of one of the South Coast’s most anticipated natural spectacles.
The 2026 sardine season officially got under way on the KZN South Coast today (June 13) when seine netters successfully hauled in the first net at Port Edward, reports South Coast Herald.
The catch sparked excitement among beachgoers and fishermen, with crowds gathering along the shoreline to witness the annual spectacle.
The arrival of the sardines marks the start of what is expected to be a busy season for netters, anglers, tourists and local businesses, with many hoping for strong shoals to move up the coast in the coming weeks.

The sardine run, often referred to as the ‘greatest shoal on Earth’, attracts thousands of visitors to the region each year and remains one of the South Coast’s most anticipated natural events.
More nettings are expected as the migration continues along the coastline.
