WATCH: First sardine net hauled in at Port Edward

The wait is over. Seine netters haul in the first sardine net of the 2026 season at Port Edward.

The 2026 sardine season officially got under way on the KZN South Coast this morning (June 13) when seine netters successfully hauled in the first net at Port Edward.

The catch sparked excitement among beachgoers and fishermen, with crowds gathering along the shoreline to witness the annual spectacle.

The arrival of the sardines marks the start of what is expected to be a busy season for netters, anglers, tourists and local businesses, with many hoping for strong shoals to move up the coast in the coming weeks.

Port Edward welcomes the first sardine haul of the season, signalling the start of one of the South Coast’s most anticipated annual events.

The sardine run, often referred to as the “greatest shoal on Earth”, attracts thousands of visitors to the region each year and remains one of the South Coast’s most anticipated natural events.

More nettings are expected as the migration continues along the coastline.
