5 gunned down on Ekurhuleni highway: City speaks out

Police are investigating a deadly shooting on an Ekurhuleni highway in which five people were killed and another later died in hospital.

The City of Ekurhuleni has condemned the mass killing of public transport operators at the Holfontein off-ramp towards Etwatwa on the N12, reports the Boksburg Advertiser.

Five people, including Benoni Taxi Association patrollers, a scholar transport driver and an e-hailing operator, were gunned down on Wednesday (June 17).

The incident, which claimed six lives, involved Benoni Taxi Association patrollers, a scholar transport driver, and an e-hailing operator.

In the meantime, the MMC for Roads and Transport Management Lindiwe Mnguni extended the city’s heartfelt condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the deceased.

“The city strongly condemns incidents of this nature and continues to support initiatives led by the Gauteng MEC to promote dialogue, co-operation and peace among taxi associations. These acts of violence undermine these efforts and place the lives of innocent people at risk,” said Mnguni.

She said the violence undermined ongoing efforts to build a safe, peaceful and stable public transport environment in Ekurhuleni, adding that it had no place in communities or within the transport industry.

According to Mnguni, the city has called on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. “Members of the public with any information relating to the shooting are also urged to come forward to assist in the investigation,” she said.
