Hefty fine for housing illegal immigrants? KZN police debunk fake post
Social media posts using the image of a top provincial officer to threaten landlords with hefty penalties have been declared fraudulent.
As misinformation continues to spread online, KZN police have moved to debunk a fake notice claiming people who harbour illegal immigrants face R10 000 fines, criminal records and possible jail time.
The notice, which has been circulating on social media, features an image of the province’s police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The notice claims landlords will face a ‘financial penalty’ of R10 000 for each tenant found to be an undocumented immigrant.
It also claims landlords could receive a criminal record for aiding and abetting by providing accommodation to illegal immigrants. The post further states that offenders could face potential jail time.
In a statement, police confirmed the notice is fraudulent and that it does not originate from the SAPS. “We encourage the public to verify information through official channels before sharing it,” police said. “Let us all play our part in promoting accurate information, responsible engagement, and respect for the rule of law.”
Police have urged South Africans to follow their official communication platforms for verified updates and official announcements.
