Probe into Free State education department over construction projects
Allegations of maladministration and irregular expenditure at three primary schools are under the microscope as a corruption-busting unit steps in.
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has been authorised to investigate allegations of maladministration and unlawful conduct relating to construction projects undertaken by the Free State Department of Education.
Bloemfontein Courant reports that according to the SIU, the investigation will examine the department’s procurement and contracting processes for construction services carried out from March 1, 2024, until the date of the proclamation.
Schools under scrutiny
The probe will also focus on allegations of unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure incurred by the department or the state in connection with projects at Caleb Motshabi (formerly Thuto Ke Thebe) Primary School, Malebogo Primary School and Tlholo Primary School.
In addition, the SIU will assess whether the department complied with applicable legislation, National Treasury and Provincial Treasury regulations, as well as its own procurement policies and procedures. “The investigation will further examine any irregular, unlawful or improper conduct by officials or employees of the department, service providers, or any other individuals or entities involved,” the SIU said.
The investigation will also extend to any related conduct involving the same individuals, entities or contracts identified during the course of the inquiry.
Potential outcomes
The SIU’s findings could lead to disciplinary action, the recovery of financial losses suffered by the state, or the referral of evidence for civil or criminal proceedings where warranted.
