Fatal boat capsize at KZN beach leaves 1 dead and 5 injured

A freak wave near Beachwood beach is suspected of overturning a vessel, resulting in a tragic loss of life and multiple hospitalisations.

One person has died and five others were seriously injured after a boat capsized near Beachwood beach on Sunday night (July 19), reports Northglen News.

Emergency services, including Metro Police Search and Rescue, the NSRI and security personnel, attended the scene.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said responders arrived to find some victims being assisted by bystanders and brought ashore.

It is believed the vessel was carrying six people, aged between approximately eight and 45. A man in his forties was initially reported missing, but was later found having sustained fatal injuries. Paramedics were unable to resuscitate him; was declared dead at the scene.

The remaining occupants sustained various injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals.

KZN VIP Protection Services spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said it is believed a freak wave caused the vessel to capsize.

“KZN VIP extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time,” he said.

Naidoo added that the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
