Teenager in court for allegedly raping younger siblings near Phalaborwa
Community members in Namakgale stepped in to apprehend a suspect after he allegedly assaulted his mother when confronted over the alleged abuse of his siblings.
A 16-year-old boy appeared in the Children’s Justice Court in Namakgale yesterday (July 20) for allegedly raping his 12-year-old sister and eight-year-old brother, reports Letaba Herald.
The incident reportedly unfolded on Wednesday evening (July 15) at the family’s residence.
Abuse comes to light after victim confides in mother
The ordeal came to light on two days later when one of the young victims confided in their mother. When the mother confronted her elder son about the disclosure, he reportedly turned violent and assaulted her.
She immediately reported the attack to the police, prompting a swift response that saw both children rushed to a local hospital for medical examinations. Two counts of rape have been registered for investigation by the Phalaborwa Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit.
Community members apprehend suspect
Before police could track him down, alert community members stepped in, successfully apprehending the teenager and handing him directly over to local authorities, where he was formally taken into custody.
